 "Not worth the money!" 2009-07-30
By Tea Girl (Raleigh, NC)
Chantal is supposed to be a top quality brand but they hit rock bottom on this product. The lid is extremely difficult to get off because the handle is in the way. Also, the rubber seal is so tight you have to let the kettle cool before removing the lid or your hand will be scalded by hot water that splatters out. The whistle works only sometimes. Extreme caution is required when opening the spout, which snaps open, b/c hot waters spits out and will scald your hand if you don't move it out of the way fast enough. While the handle is attractive with the combination of black plastic and chrome, it is not user friendly. The chrome portion gets very hot and you have to position your hand just right so you don't touch it and get burned. This tea kettle is definitely not worth the high price.

"Not a great kettle and WAY too expensive" 2008-04-05
By BookGirl (East Coast, USA)
I'm sure Amazon may delete my review since I did not buy this kettle from Amazon. I actually picked it up at the supermarket for $30 so I am not sure why Amazon, which is usually cheaper than most, is selling this item for more than twice as much money!

It looks pretty but do not be tempted by the tea kettle's shiny exterior! After a few uses, the lid starts to loosen and water and steam spew from the spaces around the lid. In addition, it is very difficult and sometimes painful to get the spout open so that you can pour your water. Not only is it awkward to open the spout because the handle is in the way but it is also annoying because if you do not remove your hand quickly you might burn yourself or at the very list water spits out of the spout a little bit. Waiting for the water to cool before opening the spout is one option but that kind of defeats the purpose.

The whistle is a very low note (not that loud shrieking, high pitched, sound) but unfortunately the whistle doesn't work all the time. This is probably due to the fact that the lid loosens so much that there isn't enough steam created inside the kettle to make the whistle sound.

Not a very good tea pot. Especially not for $70!!!

...handle is too hot to touch...always have to use something to grab the handle to pour water - annoying.

 "Best I could find" 2009-07-24
By Natural Hoof Care Practioner (Seattle, WA)
I had an old Oxo that finally bit the dust and was looking for a replacement- thought it would be easy. I mean, how hard can it be to find a decent tea kettle? Well, I found out it's much harder than I thought. I bought an Oxo good grips and burned my hand on the handle the very first time. I make a lot of tea, so I returned it. I wanted a whistling kettle that was not made in China and was of decent quality. The Chantal is beautiful and I love the harmonica whistle. The quality of workmanship is impressive. If you don't put the kettle on a burner that is too big for it, the handle barely gets above body temperature. Even if you do put it on a big burner, the handle gets quite warm, but not hot enough to burn. The only downside is that the capacity is a little less than my old one (not a problem, just noting it) and the price- which I must admit the the most I have ever paid for a tea kettle! Nevertheless, I am VERY happy with this kettle and it looks gorgeous in my kitchen.

 "it does rust out" 2009-05-11
By grandma maggie (San Mateo,CA)
I've had the colbalt blue tea kettle for a while now, and if you are not careful to rinse it out every time, it will rust out on you. Mine did!

"25 years and still an essential in my kitchen!" 2008-12-21
By Laura L. Good (The Mother Lode, CA)
I've had my Chantal tea kettle for 25 years and it still looks new! I selected it back then because of product reviews that said this was "the" tea kettle to have! It has not disappointed me over the years! It is attractive, easy to clean, boils water quickly, and the harmonica whistle is ultra cool! Every now and again, I'll add a little vinegar to the water to give the kettle a good cleaning on the inside. There is no corrosion or any other discoloration on the inside. The outside of the kettle still looks great too. And the seals/gaskets are still good but if they were in need of replacement AFTER 25 YEARS, Chantal sells the parts. If you are trying to be "green" in your product selections, choose this kettle--it will last a lifetime!

"This is my fifth chantel" 2008-11-23
By Value for My Dollar
Yes, this is my 5th, and it's not Chantel's fault! I kept burning them over and over again. I tend to put the kettle on, paddle back to my bedroom and b4 I know it, I felt asleep, only to wake up the next morning to find that I burnt the kettle again! No kettle can withstand such abuse over and over again, except a Chantel!(I tried it with cheaper version, and it was usually done with after one burning!) That is why I keep buying a Chantel. I like the enemal-on-steel idea because the hot water will not be tainted with a taste of steel. My complaint is that Chantel took away a lot of the lovely colors, limiting the choice of color to a handful.

 "Excellent Teakettle!" 2009-12-23
By Michael J. Lerch
I got this for my wife who loves to drink tea (and for me... Hot Chocolate!). What sets this apart from the other teakettles is that this has a great design to it. The arched handle makes it easy to pour even when it's heavy with boiling water (the weight of the kettle is average for teakettles), and the handle keeps your hand from getting burned since it doesn't get hot.

Overall I gave it an excellent rating, it looks great, and we'll keep this kettle for a long long time.

 "NOT a harmonica whistle" 2009-12-10
By Soooz
I ordered this tea kettle after much searching for a moderately priced kettle with good ratings and the patented harmonica whistle, as this one advertises as having. The Chantal kettles are consistently well reviewed as being long lasting and solidly built, and the patented "Hohner Harmonica Whistle" was the most important aspect of the kettle for which I wished to purchase.

My husband owned a harmonica whistle kettle prior to my meeting him and he doesn't know where he got it, plus there is no brand name on it. My mother was visiting and loved the sound- a two tone harmonica/train whistle sound that is easy for her to hear. She wears hearing aids and does not pick up high pitches like typical tea kettle whistles. So I began a search for a kettle to buy her, and settled on this one.

The first one I received sounded like a sick cat- a high pitched sound, definitely un-harmonica-like whatsoever. I sent it back, hoping it was just a defect, and exchanged it for another. The second one can't seem to decide its sound- it vacillates between a sputtery, piercing cat noise and a high pitched whistle at irregular patterns, sort of like an old, hoarse cat choir that can't find its pitch. Both noises are nothing like a harmonica noise, and fairly disturbing to the ear that can hear high pitches. It is nothing like the two tone harmonica low sounds for which I had hoped.

I do like the ergonomic handle and I know my mother will adore the cobalt blue, but the whole point of the purchase was getting her a kettle she can hear. The kettle seems sturdy and looks as if it would hold up long term like most Chantal kettles are reviewed to do. However, the packaging says nothing about the patented harmonica whistle, despite the Amazon listing description, and I think the pricier Chantal models ($120 compared to $50) possess the harmonica sound I am looking to buy for mom. That is a pretty expensive tea kettle, and I will continue to search for a more affordable one before I choose to spend so much. For $120 I would want my tea kettle to not only whistle two pleasing harmonica tones, it should do a jig on the stove top as well.

I should have further read the reviews on Amazon before buying this specific Chantal (I had read other reviews of Chantal tea kettles elsewhere) and I would have seen that many people have problems with the whistle. Upon further inspection, I see how air escapes the lid and the cap where the whistle sits does not sit well on the pour spout. When I played with the spout and the lid, however, it didn't help the whistle sound one way or another.

 "Great Harmonics" 2009-11-28
By Danielle E. Sucher (Brooklyn, NY)
I love this kettle! It does everything a tea kettle should, but with the added bonus of a really melodious whistle. It starts off low, then rises in volume, and has wonderful harmonics that are a pleasure to hear.

 "Chantal tea kettle" 2009-08-12

Just as pictured and holds a fair amount of water. The whistle is more like a low train whistle and needs some getting used to, but a good purchase.

 "Nice Kettle, Lousy Whistle" 2009-03-13
By D. Migliaccio (Northern Virginia)
I've had my Chantal Enamel-on-Steel 1.8 quart Loop Teakettle for just under a year now. It's a fine kettle; the enamel finish is still in good condition, it's shapely and easy on the eye, it heats water quickly. All this is incidental to the main the reason I wanted this kettle, which was its harmonic whistle. Well, guess what, folks - it's a lousy kettle if what you want is a dependable whistle.

My first whistle died about three months after I received the kettle as a birthday gift. The harmonic sound was the first to go; I got by for a week or two with a single-note whistle and then that gave out as well. I tried the cleaning methods suggested at the Chantal website, to no avail. I finally called their 1-800 number and a representative said she would send another whistle.

The second whistle lasted a little bit less than two months. Again, the recommended cleaning did not work, and again, I called the 1-800 number and was sent a third whistle.

This third whistle lasted only about three months, gasping along for its final week on a single-note whistle before that went bye-bye a few days ago. I called the 1-800 number and after pressing the appropriate buttons, was directed to a recording that recommended I email Chantal. Apparently their live customer service has gasped its last as well.

I've emailed Chantal for another whistle, but to be honest, I'm not hopeful for a response. I'll probably still use the kettle; it still boils water just fine. But if you're looking for a kettle with a dependable whistle - LOOK ELSEWHERE.
